Title: Healthy Lifestyles Counselor
Department: Healthy Lifestyles Status: Non-Exempt
PRIMARY PURPOSE: This position is responsible for supervising and
administering member/participant programs by assisting, motivating,
and providing guidance to all members in reaching and maintaining
a healthy lifestyle. Works under the general supervision of the Assistant
or Associate Healthy Lifestyles Director.
ESSENTIAL
DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:
• Enrolls new members, administers fitness assessments, designs
personalized training, provides quality customer service, schedules
appointments, and tracks members’ progress
• Ensures that the facility is clean and free from safety hazards
• Provides training and instruction on the fitness equipment
including free weights and cardiovascular machines
• Provides members with tools to chart progress in their workout
program
• Completes PAR-Qs and doctor clearances with members as required
• Completes member follow-up to ensure member workout retention
• Assists members in training area including spotting and general
customer service
• Maintains a friendly, helpful and respectful attitude toward
all members utilizing the facility
• Enforces rules and regulations of the Fitness Center in a
professional and courteous manner congruent to the YMCA’s four
core values
• Keeps accurate statistics on maintenance of equipment, sign-in
sheets, and workout sheets
• Completes and logs daily maintenance cleaning checklist
• Reads daily log
• Maintains a clean and organized training area throughout shift
• Assists in maintenance of fitness equipment
• Provides general health and wellness education
• Provides risk management
• Maintains positive attitude and behavior consistent with YMCA
philosophy, values and mission
• Assists Director with member retention program
• Assists Director in Annual Support Campaign
• Assists in providing coverage for the fitness facility when
necessary
• Regularly monitors gym, racquetball courts, and locker rooms
and does corrective action when necessary
• Communicates with members regarding the fitness facility,
programs, events and pool
• Develops positive and healthy relationships with members
• Services members’ needs at the membership desk when
required
• Responds to and provides CPR/First Aid in medical emergencies
situations
• Reports broken and/or missing equipment immediately
• Maintains certifications (i.e. CPR/AED, First Aid, Personal
Trainer)
• Dresses neatly and professionally in appropriate staff attire
• Wears required name tag
PERIODIC
DUTIES:
• Weekly or bi-weekly submits a completed time sheet at the
end of each week or pay period
• Annually or upon completion submits to supervisor copies of
proof of all current fitness certifications, CPR & First Aid certifications,
CECs and workshops
• Attends staff, association, and all other meetings as assigned
OTHER DUTIES:
• Performs other duties as assigned
WORKING
CONDITIONS:
• Works under general fitness facility conditions including
studios, gym, pool, conference rooms or outdoors
• Occasionally visits other branch sites
Equipment
Use:
• Frequent use of general fitness equipment including cardiovascular
and free weights
• Frequent use of standard equipment in conducting fitness assessments
(i.e body composition calipers, blood pressure cuff, sit and reach
board, step, ergometer)
• Frequent use of phone, computer, fax, copier, and other general
office equipment
• Occasional use of vacuum cleaner, mop, broom, dust pan
Work Hours:
• Various shifts as assigned
• Extended hours as required
MENTAL
DEMANDS:
• Requires alertness and ability to concentrate and conduct
appointments or supervision of the weight and cardio rooms and respond
to medical emergencies when necessary
• Basic math and computer skills to calculate, conduct fitness
assessments, generate signs and other written required written documents
• Ability to work on multi-project oriented duties
PHYSICAL
DEMANDS:
• Requires ability to sit, kneel, crouch, run, and frequent
standing and walking
• Frequent lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing up to 50 lbs.

QUALIFICATION
REQUIREMENTS:
Skills/Knowledge:
• Knowledge of member program designing and implementation
• Knowledge of conducting fitness assessments
• Knowledge of general health and wellness
• Basic computer skills
Education/Training:
• High school diploma or GED required
• Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or related field
preferred
• CPR/AED and First Aid required
• Certification in Personal Training or equivalent preferred
• TB required
Experience:
• 2 years experience in fitness field preferred

Title: Group Exercise Instructor
Department: Healthy Lifestyles Status: Non-Exempt
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Responsible for conducting YMCA’s group exercise
classes. Serves as a representative of the YMCA by providing quality
customer service, leads safe and effective workouts to all members
in accordance with class descriptions. Works under the supervision
and guidance of the Group Exercise Coordinator, Healthy Lifestyles
Director and/or Association Group Exercise Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:
. Teaches assigned class(es) or ensures that class(es) are covered:
• Starts and ends class on time per Group Exercise schedule
• Finds substitutes as necessary, at least 1 week prior to date
of request
• Informs Director or Coordinator by email and or in writing
that the class will be substituted and by whom
• Substitutes for other instructors when possible
• Does not teach more than eight (8) classes per week with the
YMCA Association
• Does not sub for a class not trained in or certified to teach
• Gives one months notice of vacation requests requiring coverage
for two or more weeks
• Conducts safe, effective and fun exercise classes, follows
class schedule description and YMCA standards and guidelines
• Communicates with members regarding Group Exercise program
and specialty classes
• Develops relationships with members as per the YMCA Member
Involvement initiative
• Makes special announcements requested by Healthy Lifestyles
Director, Branch Coordinator and/or Association Group Exercise Director
such as schedule changes, class substitutes, new classes, special
workshops or events, etc.
• Provides encouragement and motivation for all class participants
• Reports broken and/or missing equipment immediately to supervisor
• Maintains certifications:
Re-new CPR for Professional Rescuer certification annually
Maintains a current First Aid certification
Maintains Fitness Instructor certification (YMCA, ACE, AFAA, ACSM,
etc)
• Dresses neatly and professionally in workout clothing and
wears name tag and staff shirt when appropriate
• Exemplifies the
YMCA mission of spirit, mind and body and the four pillars of character
development: honesty, caring, responsibility and respect
• Maintains average of 8 participants per class. If this minimum
is not kept, for three consecutive months, supervisor may change class
format and/or personnel. Volunteer programs will be monitored on a
case by case basis
• Responds to and provides CPR/First Aid in medical emergency
situations
PERIODIC DUTIES:
