THE KALIHI Y PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy is to provide positive peer and adult support for teens, both at their schools and in their communities. This year-round support strives to reconnect them to family, school and recreational resources in the community.

SCHOOL-BASED SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT PROGRAM

In collaboration with the Department of Healths Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division more commonly know as ADAD, the  Kalihi YMCA provides accessible, on-campus substance abuse counseling for Oahu high school students who are having problems with abuse of substances like marijuana, methamphetamine (ice) and alcohol.  Services are provided to youth attending the following High Schools: Aiea, Campbell, Farrington, Kailu, Kaimuki, Leilehua, Moanalua, Nanakuli, Roosevelt, Waialua, Waipahu and Waianae.  Youth who are between the ages of twelve (12) and eighteen (18) may participate in the outpatient substance abuse treatment services.  Youth enrollment is voluntary and services are available to youth who are willing to acknowledge and address the problems they experience due to their alcohol and drug use.

Teen loss of control to drugs or alcohol is also associated with increasing violence, early pregnancy , law violations, run-away behavior and victimization.  Teen who use drugs or alcohol tend to select peers who are also users.  This increases the strength of negative peer pressure and selects out family or friends who might hve been a positive influence.  Teen substance abuse problems almost always exist hand in hand with school failure and alienation from family.   Often,  as a result, substance abusing teens are often left with no healthy adult relationships.
